Join GreenFaith NJ to mobilize faith community support for climate justice.
When GreenFaith was founded in NJ in 1992, we focused on helping congregations audit their energy usage and improve their sustainability with solar panels and more. It became clear that, while that was important, those actions would not make a big enough difference quickly enough to impact the climate catastrophe. GreenFaith’s strategy transformed into organizing activists to work for systems change on the legislative and policy level.
In a 2021 Sojourners OpEd, GF’s Executive Director Rev Fletcher Harper said:
“First, clergy need to name what is creating this problem … For religious leaders, this means … getting comfortable saying things like: [Big Oil] companies are systematically destroying the planet — and financial giants … are bankrolling the destruction. … We must make it clear that these companies, their shareholders, our government, and [more] must change … This is not a time for preachers to play it safe; it is time for prophetic thunder. The well-being of billions of people and the planet’s future hang in the balance.”

The 2025-2026 NJ GreenFaith campaign is to pass the New Jersey bill Polluters Pay To Make NJ Affordable Act (2338/A3735), in coalition with our statewide climate justice partners. The bill holds fossil fuel companies financially responsible for current and future climate disasters, and shifts the cost burden for repairs and resiliency projects from taxpayers and towns to the industry that has been making enormous profits for decades while they’ve been funding a successful global climate science disinformation campaign.
GreenFaith NJ is also participating in the GreenFaith national campaign: Covenant For Our Future. As this country hurtles toward ever more cruel policies and actions, GreenFaith is leading a national coalition of faith groups to rise up to offer an alternate vision for our country – a unified moral mandate based on Economic Dignity & Healthcare for All, Community Safety & Racial Equity, Migrant Rights, Climate Care & Stewardship, and Global Solidarity for the Common Good.
